Valka town

Valka is situated in the northern part of Latvia at the border with the Republic of Estonia, 179 km from Riga. The river Pedele flows through the town.
The first historical source where Valka was mentioned was the Debt Book of Riga in 1286, but on June 11, 1584, the Polish King Stefan Batory granted the town rights to Valka. On July 1, 1920,Valka was divided between the two new independent states of Latvia and Estonia. The Latvian part of Valka lost its administrative and economic centre, which remained in the Estonian part; Valka got mostly dwelling houses. Valka and Valga are called twin towns, the state border separates them and it is worth seeing it.
The National Theatre was founded in Valka. On November 17, 1918, it was decided to proclaim an independent state of Latvia.
The border separated the countries, not the people. They understood that they can be more successful in culture, sport, education if they work together.
One of the most convincing examples is the dance studio “Joy” , sport events, race Valka – Valga, rock festival, etc. .
Gradually joint projects for the youth develop, such as within EU programmes “Youth”, INTERREG III B, pupils camp.
